In the studio today meditations on #sovereignty and #royalty, being exalted just for being. I am inspired by the message of Royalty by Francesca Battistelli. The lioness rushed in with a flood of emotions as I was singing along.
I love this practice.
Before, for years and years I was creatively blocked and denying myself. I had no idea of the emotion bottled up and locked away inside me. How often do we allow ourselves to truly feel, to genuinely express, to be vulnerable, to reveal and expose and share? From our childhood many of us learn to stuff “unacceptable” feelings. But what happens to them? They are still with us, lodged in our bodies, causing distortion and disease and coloring our relationships and interactions.
It took me 48 years to reach over-saturation, my body literally toxic from a lifetime of silence. My hope is that all the young people learn these lessons early and that all the old ones free themselves now.
This is why I do what I do…to free myself, one dab of paint at a time. I paint to restore myself, to shed the beliefs and thoughts that are not mine. I have carried them long enough. I have weighed myself down and repressed and denied myself and now it is time. Time to say goodbye to fear. To let go of the idea that I don’t deserve, cannot have, am not capable, am taking up too much space, have nothing to say, nothing to contribute, am not worthy. It is a lie. Every one of us is not only worthy but is, as Francesca says, crowned in victory, an heir to majesty. Claim it my friends. You are it. You deserve it. And you can have it!
Creativity for self-confidence: value yourself like a goddess
If you have struggled with self-worth, valuing yourself, or loving yourself, the idea of being a creative goddess may not sit comfortably with you yet. But stick with me. When you start thinking like a creative goddess, all kinds of things fall away that have been holding you back. The beliefs that make you feel bad about yourself, the thoughts that de-value yourself, and the fears that stop you from living and brave creative life you deserve all are suddenly like fish out of water. They do not belong.
To help you over the threshold of belief, I encourage you to just pretend for a while. Pretending is using your imagination to dream up something different. And your imagination is powerful beyond belief. As you pretend to be a creative goddess, gradually make-believe will give way to a whole new reality.
The song “Whistle a Happy Tune” from The King and I says it perfectly:
I whistle a happy tune
And every single time
The happiness in the tune
Convinces me that I’m not afraid
Make believe you’re brave
And the trick will take you far
You may be as brave
As you make believe you are!
I LOVE these lyrics. This song is all about using our imagination to change our reality!!! Fake it ’til you make it!
Creativity for self-confidence: The practice of forgiveness
A lot of what stops us from being empowered are the stories we tell ourselves. Some of this probably comes for our youth. Maybe you were ignored, maybe when you really wanted something, you did not receive it, and in your child-mind you believe it was because you did something wrong…you were at fault.
Taking time to identify what those negative messages are can be really helpful. Make a list, if you can, of all the negative things you can think of that you have thought or said to or about yourself (and others). Pick one and see if you can trace it back to a memory. As a child, who or what delivered that message to you? If it was a person who hurt you, work to forgive them. Realize that they were doing the best they could. We are all damaged. We were raised by imperfect parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, foster parents…we are all damaged goods. And they did what they could. But it left scars. So, if you can do it, forgiveness will help YOU heal and move on. And forgiveness is no
Just a note here, I am not necessarily talking about forgiving someone to their face. You can write a letter to them that you never give and burn it. You can walk in nature and speak your forgiveness to the trees, the wind, the sea. The forgiveness is all for you, so the other person does not have to be part of that conversation.
Creativity for self-confidence: Success with affirmations
Once you have forgiven, it is time to re-write those old stories and messages. The key here is not creating a crazy affirmation you absolutely do not believe. For example, if you have a message that says your art is not worthwhile, jumping to “My art is award-winning” might be too big a leap. So find a mid-range affirmation. Something like “my art helps me heal” might be a great bridge. It is something that you know is true, and replacing the negative with a positive message will move you one step closer to where you want to be. Some of my favorite affirmations are:
- I am worthy
- What I do is worthy
- I approve of myself
- I deserve all good
Alright creative goddesses, now you are armed and ready to establish your sovereignty!
Yours in brave creative living,
Creative Goddess Larissa
