ow to figure out what you want in life: Find your passion

How would you like to wake up each day knowing you are doing exactly what you want to be doing, living a purpose-driven, passionate life?

Is there a secret that other people know and you do not? Yes, and I am going to tell you all about it! Because a passionate, confident, meaningful life is totally within your reach.

If you are like most people, from the time you were born you learned that satisfaction, love, food, praise, etc., came from outside of you. As you grow and continue seeking satisfaction from the things outside of you, you feel more and more like something is missing. You keep looking “out there” for your happiness, but all the while the feeling of emptiness grows. Because the desire to live a passionate, purpose-driven life cannot be satisfied by looking “out there.”

I know. I have been there.

To figure out what you want in life shift your mind

The yearning you feel is deeper than a shiny new car, a new home, a million in the bank, or the perfect job. The desire you feel comes from deep inside and it urges you to discover your true path, your passion, and what you really want in life. And answering this desire requires a totally different approach than everything you have learned: you have to stop looking outside of you for satisfaction and start looking within.

Not long ago, I was a high-paid corporate creative director. On the outside life looked good. I had a beautiful family and home, and a career that had steadily grown over the course of 20 years. But in truth, my feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction had grown to a point I could almost not bear. Life conspired to help me and I had an epiphany. I realized that my entire life I had been making decisions from the outside in...using logic, looking at numbers, weighing pros and cons. And there I was, unhappy. So, I decided to stop looking “out there” and start looking inside. Let me tell you...it was not easy!

Figure out what you want in life with self-reflection

If you are like I was, you may be kind of scared about looking inside yourself. Because life has been busy, packed with work, family, relationships, home, exercise, eating well there has been little time for self-reflection. So your inner world is uncharted territory. It can be scary when you being. But with a few tools and consistency, you will be able to figure out what you really want in life.

Figure out what you want in life with your intuition

The key to figuring out what we want in life lies in developing our intuitive instincts. You may not think you have any, but you do. Trust me. I thought the same thing. But every human being has intuitive instincts. And it just takes some practice to be able to tune in. Be patient with yourself. Just like building muscle strength at the gym, building your intuitive instincts takes consistency and dedication. But you can do it! Here’s what to do:

  1. When you are faced with a decision, write about it, and keep notes about the thoughts and feelings you are having. You want to start paying close attention to your instincts, even if at first you are not able to follow them.
  2. When you are ready, follow one of your instincts. If you are making a decision and your instincts tell you NO, say no. Write about it. How does it feel? The first several times you follow your instincts, your reasoning mind may object really strongly. This is to be expected. You are teaching your brain new tricks, which means literally building new neural pathways.

Stick with it. Do not give up. It gets easier. And the more you follow your intuition, the less of an influence the reasoning side of your mind will have over your big life decisions.

Figure out what you want in life with your gut feelings

Another way to figure out what you want is to tune into your body. And there is science to support this approach. According to a Florida State neuroscientist, the gut and brain are constantly communicating via the vagus nerve. The Vagus nerve is a massive, two-way communication network in the body (100-times larger than the surface of the skin) responsible for sending more signals than any other organ system. And the signals don't just go from the brain to body. They go from the body to brain, too. These body-to-brain signals are commonly called gut feelings. Try these tips to tune into your body wisdom.

Tips for tuning into your gut feelings

  1. Think about something in your life that you are making a decision about. It may be something that is weighing on your mind that you know you should do something about. Perhaps a relationship that is going sour. Or a job change your are thinking about. Anything!
  2. With a pen and paper, write what this thing is. Then write below it your possible choices. In the example of a job change your choice might be to take the new job, to stay in the old job, or to stay in the old job and continue looking for something else.
  3. Next, close your eyes. Pick one of your choices and imagine how you would feel having made this choice. Imagine it is done. Notice how you feel. How does your body feel? Open your eyes, and next to that choice, write down what you noticed. Repeat for each choice.

If closing your eyes to imagine does not work, you can instead use writing to explore each choice. Write about how you feel imagining you have made each choice. Write about the emotions that you feel and how you feel in your body...is there excitement? Fear? Follow the feeling!
