Mermaid: I Set Myself Free is the first of a new freedom series inspired by an exploration of sovereignty and freedom, and this poem which came through on Monhegan Island in the summer of 2020. 

“You may not recognize me, my hair wild from the sea,
Sun gold my skin
The cliffs I climbed gifted me with a cut on my shin
Singing a tune I caught walking barefoot at noon.
Seagull feathers in my hair
Seaweed between my toes,
You may not recognize me.
I set myself free.”
