On New Year’s eve, Jeff and i were immersed in the magic of day meeting night, watching clouds turn shades of pink and orange over Big Cypress, when a lone flamingo gracefully moved across the sky. What are the odds? Not great, actually. And just two days before we were going to Flamingo Campground in Everglades National Park, too. An auspicious sign.

Flamingos are flamboyant, elegant, bold, and demonstrate balance and grace through their one-legged resting pose. Once abundant in Florida, they were hunted for their feathers and their habitat destroyed. For decades florida flamingos were only found in captivity. But recently wild ones have been returning, some say they were blown here be a hurricane. They are not yet permanent residents. But as we humans make changes to restore their watery homeland, some may decide Florida is once again a safe place to call home. May it be so.
