Oil over mixed media on canvas
As a child I dreamed of a yellow flower growing in a cave. It grew from shiny black obsidian. It stood alone, the only color, the only light surrounded by a cold unfaltering darkness and as I watched a single drop of dew, like a tear, rolled down one of its petals and fell, as if in slow motion, to from the flower to the glass-like surface from which it grew. As the drop touched the glass it created a high sound like crystal and briefly the silence was broken.
This painting is an explosion of that dream, transforming it from solitary, lonely, and isolated into a dance of color and a celebration of freedom. No longer alone, the yellow flower has birthed thousands of others, filling the cave, growing through cracks, escaping to the sunlight outside. I painted this piece for all who are rescuing the precious within and setting themselves free.
